Dupa Galeria KromArt din Tg Mures si Carturesti Cluj, a venit randul Ceainariei Carturesti din Timisoara sa gazduiasca expozitia noastra itineranta, pornita din dorinta Clubului de a promova ilustratia si ilustratorii romani in zone ale tarii in care ei sunt mai putin prezenti.
Vernisajul expozitiei a avut loc saptamana trecuta, in data de 18 ianuarie, iar expozitia poate fi vizitata pana in data de 18 februarie, pe strada Mercy nr.7, de luni pana sambata, in intervalul orar 11-19.
Le multumim tuturor celor prezenti la deschidere si va asteptam, in continuare, cu drag!

Sleeping Beauty - My first illustrations for an iPad & iPhone App

Last year I almost had the chance to work on some static, grayscale illustrations for Kindle book reader device but I guess it wasn't meant for me to do it at that point.

Luckily, the digital publishing market is developing fast and it becomes more and more interesting and accessible so I recently illustrated for my first Portugal based client an adapted version of Sleeping Beauty as part of their Bedtime Stories Collection. The 13 full color illustrations are now used in an App that can be downloaded on your iPhone or iPad from the iTunes store. (But, as far as I know, you cannot access the App directly trough the computer.)

And this one is for the iPad.
Although they are not animated, a certain degree of interactiveness exists as the child can turn the pages whenever he wants and he can also decide if the text is going to be read to him or overlayed on the pages in order to read it himself.

Anul trecut, aproape ca am avut ocazia sa lucrez la un proiect compus dintr-o serie de ilustratii statice si alb-negru pentru platforma Kindle dar, pana la urma, n-a fost sa se intample.
Din fericire, piata digitala a cartii se dezvolta asa de repede si de bine incat de curand am avut ocazia sa ilustrez, pentru primul meu client din Portugalia, o adaptare a Frumoasei din Padurea Adrmita, adaptare cu 13 ilustratii, de data aceasta, color. Povestea a fost transformata intr-o aplicatie pentru iPad si iPhone ce poate fi descarcata acum de pe iTunes, ca parte dintr-o colectie mai ampla de povesti.
(Insa, din cate stiu, nu poate fi accesata direct de pe calculator.)

Chiar daca nu-i o versiune animata, are interactivitate in sensul in care un copil poate rasfoi paginile dupa bunul plac si poate alege ca textul sa-i fie citit ori sa-l citeasca singur.

Bologna Children's Book Fair 2011

It's a really difficult task to write only a little bit about Bologna and to make it with a personal approach. If I would try to do it I would only say that I have went there twice and never came back the same person or the same illustrator. For the rest of you who perhaps have never attended the fair and have considered going there I will do my best with a more unbiased description. For the rest of you who have already been there this article might be just a boring description far away from the vividness of the real experience.

Since 1963 Bologna Children's Book Fair opens each year to reveal the trends in the children's multimedia and publishing industry. At this point it is considered the most important international event of it's kind and it gathers more than 1000 exhibitors and a diverse program of events for the attendees - exhibitions, presentations, debates, seminars and meetings. The fair it's closed to the public at large but opened for four days to publishers, writers, illustrators and designers, organizations, literary and art agents, distributors and journalists that report on the latest news in this field.

One country is selected each year as a Guest of Honor to exhibit it's best books and illustrations and if in 2010 Slovakia did wow me with it's exhibition, this year was Lithuania's turn to do it with a simply amazing display containing the illustrations and the published books containing them. Everything was enclosed in a large, thick and white wall with little doors that opened in a German Advent calendar style revealing a varied collection of amazing illustrations selected from 32 of the most famous Lithuanian illustrators of all time. Kęstutis Kasparavičius, one of my favorite ones was there as well and as I have found out today he was actually in town too.
I just came across their website and wept on a few things I have missed. Now I'm trying to comfort myself and to get used to the idea that it's impossible not to miss a few very important things in the end. Although I'm a usually focused person, when I'm around amazing books I tend to have the attention span of a mouse inside a cheese cupboard.
I just can't help it so it's better to get used to it.

Lithuania's presentation did not stop here, though. Three other exhibitions were held in the center of the town. One was focusing on photography and other tow on illustration. I only had the chance to attend the opening of ILLUSTRARIUM - Soviet Lithuanian Children’s Book Illustration and it reminded me of a time (not so long ago) when we were walking the same line in this field with the rest of the communist countries. And when it comes to illustration this was not a bad thing at all. Here and there most of the artists that refused to pay tribute to the political system have found a refuge into illustrating children's books which led to transforming illustration into the most creative artistic field. Of course, some of the books were pure communist propaganda but creative nevertheless.
Going back to the Soviet Lithuanian Children’s Book Exhibition what impressed me most (beside the artistic language, of course) was that originals were displayed. Originals coming from the past 50-60 years were kept in perfect shape and presented simply and beautifully with light coming from a side of the display.

Illustration is always at the center stage in Bologna and since I live in a place where sometimes illustrators are not even credited on the cover by the publishing house they work with, it feels me up with joy to be reminded that, yes, we are precious too.
In Bologna, only in the fair area three other exhibitions were devoted to illustration. Jutta Bauer exhibited some of her works as the winner of the BIB Award 2010 and Philip Giordano, the winner of the 2010 SM International Award for Illustration, has also displayed his recent work together with a filmed interview.
He was attending the fair too and was launching his newest book La princesa Noche Resplandeciente, an amazing story about the impossible love between the Emperor of Japan and the Princess of the Shining Night.

The famous Illustrator's Exhibition was there as well as it has been there each year from 1967 onward with the same astonishing quality of works. At the Illustrator's Cafe the jury of the exhibition have presented their criteria for selecting only 76 participants out of more than 2000.

Kitty Crowther and Nikolaus Heidelbach were also exhibited in town but I only saw the second one (twice!).
Shaun Tan was awarded the Astrid Lindgren prize and the announcement was transmitted directly to Bologna.

It came as a big surprise for me (but definitely a good one!) since the nominee list was really long and filled with great names like Quentin Blake, Eric Carle, Wolf Erlbruch, Jutta Bauer, Lisbeth Zwerger, Gabriel Pacheco and many, many, many others and not only great illustrators but 175 people and organizations to be precise.

Each year Bologna rewards the best books trough the BolognaRagazzi Award.
Esope's FABLES, published by the French ÉDITIONS MILAN has won the Fiction category and
I was happy to see that A HOUSE OF THE MIND: MAUM from CHANGBI PUBLISHERS of Korea has won the award for Non Fiction category. Two years ago I had the chance of meeting Iwona Chmielewska in Warsaw while she was presenting her work during a symposium. She is a polish illustrator who's very popular on the Korean market.
MIL-FOLHAS – HISTÓRIA ILUSTRADA DO DOCE by COSAC NAIFY (Brazil) has won the New Horizons category and Opera Prima was given to MONSIEUR CENT TÊTES, France, ÉDITIONS MeMo.

What I have come to appreciate at the Bologna Children's Book Fair is the novelty of the information. I only realized it this year when I went there with just a slight idea of what can be done in the digital publishing and I came back with many questions answered.
Another thing that I love is the diversity of the books and illustrations styles. And it's so great to see that diversity is encouraged! From an overload of cuteness to the cutting edge, everything is there. From vector art to traditional metal engraving, everything is there. From old masters to the newest people in the field, everything is there.

This year I also had the chance to be there too with a small display of work as each year the Romanian Ministry of Culture and National Heritage is inviting one illustrator and one writer to attend the fair and to exhibit their work at the Romanian stand. I'm really thankful for this honor.

Because I've been really busy working, for months and months it has been really quiet on my blog. Now I'm trying to catch up wit a few updates on my projects and hopefully a new and improved website soon.

This is one of the projects I had in mind sharing but I'll add several more in the next days.

My illustrations made for Selecta Spielzeug are now on the market as part of an educational game that will train the knowledge and concentration of little children with ages between 1 and 3 years old.

John Cleese on Creativity

I really appreciated his thoughts.

Biblioteca Judeteana Arad este una din putinele institutii romanesti care promoveaza ilustratia de carte. La invitatia lor, am avut ocazia sa coordonez in perioada 24 august - 2 septembrie 2010 cea de-a doua editie a Taberei Internationale Animaliter, tabara care s-a adresat studentilor si elevilor cu varste cuprinse intre 18 si 22 de ani.
Tabara s-a axat in jurul a zece povesti populare europene ce vor fi tiparite pana in anul 2012, impreuna cu ilustratiile facute la Bata, intr-o carte bilingva romano-engleza.

Povestile au fost trase la sorti, iar participantii le-au ilustrat intr-o serie de opt lucrari - sase ilustratii de interior si doua ilustrari ale titlului ce au combinat caligrafia cu ilustratia. Participantii au primit cerinte clare, pe care le-au si respectat iar rezultatele (foarte bune) se pot vedea in lucrarile finale.

Programul taberei a fost completat cu scurte excursii in imprejurimi, cu vizitarea catorva colectii etnografice, a Casei Memoriale Eugen Popa, cu o vizita la Castelul de la Bulci si in Parcul Castelului Savarsin. In excursiile noastre, am trecut Muresul pe un pod plutitor - brod, l-am trecut si cu barca si am mai mers si in caruta trasa de cai pana la Castelul Mocioni, asa cum probabil ca a facut-o si Franz Liszt in trecut. :)

Tabara a fost incheiata cu o seara festiva, un mic vernisaj la Caminul Cultural din Bata si un spectacol de teatru, bazat pe trei dintre povesti si sustinut de catre copii din comuna. Spectacolul de teatru si vernisajul lucrarilor au fost reluate in data de 16.09 la Muzeul de Arta din Arad iar
expozitia va fi deschisa publicului pana in data de 03.10.2010.

Dupa o saptamana de dureri si imobilizare la pat, mi-am adus aminte ce bine a fost la Varsovia unde am fost invitata de catre Biblioteca Judeteana „A. D. Xenopol” Arad la Colocviul International de Ilustratie Animaliter si am incarcat aici o parte din fotografiile facute (cu tot cu explicatiile de rigoare).

Daca totul merge bine, poate voi reusi pana la sfarsitul saptamanii sa fac un update si la portofoliu ca sa va convingeti ca n-am lenevit in ultima jumatate de an.

Pentru ca mi-am vazut renul din Laponia, mi-am adus aminte si de felicitari. Daca ati fost cuminti, ati cumparat deja si le-ati si trimis prietenilor si nu numai. Le mai puteti gasi, tot in Bucuresti, la magazinul Wagner - arte frumoase si povesti pe Bulevardul Carol nr. 39. In final (si in cea mai mare cantitate), le gasiti - ca si anul trecut - in reteaua magazinelor Carturesti din Cluj, Iasi, Constanta, Suceava, Bucuresti si Timisoara.

Nu m-am blazat, am fost ocupata. Asa de ocupata incat mi-am uitat parola de la blog si am uitat ca, de cateva zile incoace, nu prea mai am mare lucru de facut.
In rutina si viteza mea, cautand pe site-ul ING comisioanele pentru tranzactii in valuta mi-am gasit renul si familia. Campania pe care o asteptam cu nerabdare s-a si terminat...

Euro AB-CD book

I recently was chosen to do an illustration for the
cover of the Euro AB-CD book. This is a lovely collaborative project
initiated by The Cultural Dreamweavers Foundation
from The Netherlands. It reunites a number of 27
illustrators, one from each European Union's member state.
I recently found out that Steve Simpson, one of my
favorites, is representing his country (Ireland) and was chosen to illustrate the page for letter "I", so, I can't wait to see the book!

In data de 01.06 a luat nastere un grup de ilustratori romani: ILLOSTATION. In prezent grupul are doar trei membri insa in curand multi altii ni se vor alatura.

Ne-am propus sa-i cunoastem mai bine pe cei care ilustreaza deja de multi ani, ne-am propus sa-i cunoastem mai bine si pe cei care de-abia acum au inceput si ne-am mai propus sa impartasim idei si resurse. Ar mai fi multe lucruri la care ne-am gandit insa cred ca aici le-a exprimat Cri mai bine.

Daca vreti sa cititi primul articol scris pentru Illostation (despre o scurta istorie a ilustratiei), o puteti face aici. Sper sa va placa si sa-l gasiti folositor pentru ca urmeaza mai multe articole despre tehnici si procedee de lucru si mai urmeaza si cateva interviuri.

Va asteptam cu drag sa ne vizitati si sa participati.

Andrea and Mark have this great website with podcasts about children's books.
I was recently invited by Andrea to submit a short review of my favorite book. You can listen it here but I warmly reccomend you to listen all their podcasts since they can be a great inspiration.

Unfortunately, Gute Nacht - oder: Der lange Weg ins Bett (Good Night - the long way to bed), the book that I reviewed, is available at the moment only
in German but, if someday you'll find it translated, it's a good acquisition.

Am fost de curand invitata de catre Andrea sa fac o scurta recenzie a unei carti preferate.
Poate fi ascultata aici, dar va recomand sa ascultati toate podcast-urile de pe site caci merita cu siguranta.

Din pacate, Gute Nacht - oder: Der lange Weg ins Bett (Noapte buna - sau lungul drum spre somn), cartea prezentata, este disponibila in acest moment doar in limba germana si probabil ca nu va fi tradusa in limba romana, insa, in principiu, este o carte minunata pe care o recomand cu caldura celor ce o pot gasi si citi. Mai multe detalii despre carte, autor si ilustrator pot fi gasite aici.

The storyhopper.com frogs team

This was just the kind of project that I enjoy doing very much and hopefully the fun that I had working on it can be seen in the final result.

This is the whole set of frogs for storyhopper.com, 10 avatars and the website logos.
All of the characters and especially the logo were supposed to look like some old stickers to fit the web site's theme: old scrapbook journal. I collaborated on this project with B-media Research and especially with my colleague and friend Stefan Lazar who works for B-media and is also an amazing web designer who did an outstanding job with the design of storyhopper.com. The site will be very soon released and it's supposed to be a website for creative kids and their wonderful stories.

Feels like Christmas

It feels like Christmas even if outside everything is green and blooms. In case you're wondering why, that's only because we have received two samples of our books and that's how I feel every time something I did gets back on me.
I've worked together with Razvan Cornici on those two books for several months, enjoyed every moment and loved the stories from the first second.
I must admit that Tommy and Erin Ronayne are two very talented and very young authors and their father Kelly Ronayne is simply the best father you can wish for.

Saptamana trecuta am primit doua exemplare ale celor doua carti ilustrate la sfarsitul anului trecut. Timp de mai multe luni, am lucrat impreuna cu Razvan Cornici la
cele 64 de ilustratii, ne-am bucurat de fiecare moment si de povestile celor doi tineri autori Tommy si Erin Ronayne, povesti nascocite si cizelate cu ajutorul tatalui lor Kelly Ronayne.
